Hydrogen cyanide (HCN)

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN)

Extremely toxic, colorless gas/vapor with a bitter almond-like odor (not always perceptible); inhibits cell respiration.

Can be measured with:

air-Qs, with sensor for

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN)

Origin/occurrence:

In chemistry/metallurgy, in nitriding processes, from cyanide salts under the influence of acids, in fires of nitrogen-containing plastics.

Limit values:

Very low workplace and short-term limit values (often in the low ppm range).

Consequences:

Rapid onset-head dizziness, convulsions, respiratory arrest; fatal in a short time with high exposure.

Note:

Specific antidotes (e.g. hydroxocobalamin) in an emergency; gas warning technology and training mandatory.
