Methanethiol / methyl mercaptan (CH₄S)

Methanethiol / methyl mercaptan (CH₄S)

Foul-smelling, sulphurous gas; produced during decomposition processes and in natural gas processing; irritant and toxic in higher concentrations.

Methanethiol / methyl mercaptan (CH₄S)

Emergence:

Formed naturally during anaerobic decomposition of organic matter (e.g. sewage treatment plants, landfills), in the paper/pulp industry and in natural gas/crude oil processes. Also used as an odorant in natural gas mixtures.

Limit values:

Legally defined depending on the country/regulation (e.g. occupational exposure limit values/AGW, short-term exposure limit values/STEL). Typical ppm ranges can be found in safety data sheets; local regulations are decisive.

Consequences of high concentrations:

Strongly irritating to eyes/respiratory tract, headache, nausea; respiratory depression at very high exposure.

Special features:

Very low odor threshold, odor fatigue possible; technical monitoring via gas warning technology recommended.
