If the air in your home is stuffy and it is difficult to breathe, this has a negative effect on body and soul. Concentration problems, headaches, sleeping problems and more are often the result. This is why a pleasant indoor climate is so important. In this article, we explain which factors are important and give tips on how to achieve a comfortable climate without expensive air purification devices.

What is important for a comfortable indoor climate?

For a good indoor climate, the following four criteria must be observed:

  • Fresh air supply: Stuffy, stale air is harmful to health in the long run and also often leads to mold growth.
  • Suitable humidity: Too high humidity also promotes mold and moisture damage, while too little humidity causes, for example, irritated mucous membranes, chapped skin or dry eyes.
  • Comfortable room temperature: The right temperature is important above all for individual well-being and health.
  • High air quality: The ideal air composition contains sufficient oxygen and as few pollutants as possible (such as ammonia, benzene or formaldehyde).

Only when all four factors work together is a pleasant indoor climate created in which you can really feel comfortable and relax. But how do you ensure that all the criteria are right?

8 tips to improve air quality

1. ventilate correctly

Getting into the habit of proper ventilation helps in several ways: you ensure regular air exchange, reduce excessive humidity and achieve better air quality. The ideal procedure is regular airing: open all windows completely and let the air flow through.

In the summer months it may be about 20 to 30 minutes, in winter better only 5 to 10 minutes. Then close all windows completely. Repeat the whole process about 3 to 4 times a day. In contrast to constantly tilted windows, the air exchange is much more effective, and you also save on expensive heating costs in winter.

2. bringing more green into the living space

Green plants are the most natural option for improving the indoor climate. They increase humidity, produce oxygen and bind all kinds of pollutants from the indoor air. Some suggestions:

- The monocot is beautiful to look at with its white flowers and at the same time a hard-working air purifier.

- The easy-care aloe vera does well on a sunny windowsill, where it binds dust from the air.

- Various indoor ferns are decorative and useful at the same time.

- Ivy not only beautifies the room with its playful tendrils, but also filters numerous pollutants, e.g. mould spores.

- The bow hemp is perfect for the bedroom because it absorbs CO2 at night.

- The palm-like dragon trees are also popular - but you should avoid them if you have children or animals in the household, as the plants are considered slightly poisonous.

Tip: If you don't have a green thumb, you can use humidifiers, indoor fountains or similar to balance the humidity instead.

3. pay attention to the right temperature

In order for your own living space to become a feel-good environment, the temperature must also be right. However, finding the ideal room temperature is not that easy. After all, everyone has their own personal comfort temperature. It is therefore not uncommon for disputes to arise among several household members.

However, some basic rules can be laid down: the bathroom, for example, is usually warmer so that you don't have to freeze after a bath or shower. The kitchen, on the other hand, may be colder, as it usually heats up by itself when cooking. A cooler temperature is also recommended for sleeping. You will find approximate guidelines below:

- Living rooms: 20-23°C

- Bedroom: 16-18°C

- Kitchen: 18-20°C

- Bathroom: 22-23°C

4. remove dust regularly

For good air and a good indoor climate, it also helps to reduce house dust pollution. This includes regular dusting and vacuuming. The more people or animals live in the household, the more often dust removal is necessary. For allergy sufferers, a special allergy filter in the hoover is useful so that as little residual dust as possible is distributed in the room.

5. wet clean carpets and upholstered furniture.

Dusters and hoovers are effective, but they only remove the surface layer of dust. In order to further reduce the dust load, additional wet cleaning is needed. House dust settles particularly well in textiles, so carpets and upholstered furniture should be wet cleaned at least twice a year. This removes all dust particles and pollutants so that they can no longer enter the indoor air.

6. do not use aggressive cleaners

When cleaning, it is advisable to use natural cleaning agents. Chemicals from conventional cleaners also pollute the air. What's more, they are real polluters. Sustainable cleaning with environmentally friendly alternatives is therefore worthwhile in many ways.

Another tip: While cleaning, it is a good time to air the room thoroughly. This way, any chemicals or pollutants from the cleaning agent do not remain in the room air.

7. use natural room fragrances

It goes without saying that your own home should smell pleasant. However, covering up the musty room air with artificial air fresheners is not the best strategy. It is better to clean regularly and ventilate well several times a day, then additional fragrances are not necessary.

Those who nevertheless do not want to do without them should opt for room fragrances with natural ingredients: Flowers, herbs, essential oils and the like can even be beneficial to health in moderation.

8. measure air quality

If you really want to be 100 % sure that your indoor climate is always perfectly balanced, you should measure the air quality professionally. A high-quality measuring device can monitor factors such as air composition, humidity, temperature, particulates content, etc. for you. This way you know exactly where you can start and improve. This way, nothing stands in the way of your personal feel-good climate!

Conclusion: With many small measures to a perfect indoor climate

Good air and a pleasant indoor climate are essential for you to be able to breathe easy at home. And you don't necessarily need expensive air purification equipment to achieve this: the tips presented here can be easily implemented in everyday life and ensure a feel-good climate in your own four walls.
