Correct ventilation in summer: how to keep the air in your house or apartment fresh

Keeping indoor spaces pleasantly cool and fresh in summer is a challenge. With our following tips and strategies, you can ensure an optimum indoor climate, even when temperatures rise outside.

1. the best times to ventilate in summer

To avoid stuffy air in your home, you should ventilate at the right times:

  • Ventilate in the morning and evening. Open the windows early in the morning or late in the evening when it is coolest outside and the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature. This ensures a quick and effective exchange of air.
  • Avoid ventilating during the hot midday hours. During this time, warm air flows into the home and worsens the indoor climate.

2. cross ventilation ensures optimum air exchange

One of the most effective methods of bringing fresh air into rooms is cross-ventilation:

  • Open windows on opposite sides. This creates a draught that exchanges the air more quickly.
  • Leave doors open. This promotes air circulation between the rooms.

3. monitor air quality with the air-Q air measuring device

Monitoring the air quality helps to determine the optimum time for ventilation. Use an air measuring device such as the air-Q for this. This device measures relevant air components such as oxygen, CO₂particulates and other relevant indoor air parameters. This allows you to ventilate in a data-based and targeted manner when the air quality drops and ensure permanently healthy indoor air.

4. keep the heat out

To prevent rooms from heating up unnecessarily, you should take measures to keep the heat outside:

  • Keep the windows closed during the day - especially during the hot hours.
  • Close curtains and shutters. Dark curtains or closed shutters prevent the sun from heating up the rooms.

5. use an air purifier

If you keep the windows closed during the day, the air quality can quickly drop. This is where air purifiers can help and clean stale indoor air. We measured what an air filter like the Briiv Air Filter can do in our test. You can find the results in our air-Q Lab "Briiv - The most sustainable air filter".

6. additional tips for a better indoor climate in summer

In addition to ventilation, there are other measures that improve the indoor climate in summer:

  • Place indoor plants. Plants such as aloe vera or hemp improve the air quality by producing oxygen and filtering pollutants.
  • Use humidifiers. Especially in very hot and dry periods, a humidifier can improve the indoor climate.
  • Switch off unused electrical appliances. Appliances such as computers or televisions radiate heat. Switch them off when they are not in use.
  • Only use an air conditioner in an emergency and always in combination with a humidifier. Otherwise, the humidity drops rapidly, the air becomes dry and this puts a strain on the mucous membranes. Dry mucous membranes provide favorable conditions for pathogens and weaken the body's immune system.

With these strategies, you can ensure fresh and pleasant air in your home even on hot summer days. Enjoy the summer without having to sacrifice comfort!

Summary

When is the best time to ventilate in summer?

keyboard_arrow_down
The best time to ventilate is early in the morning or late in the evening, when the outside temperature is lower than inside the home. This prevents warm air from flowing into the house.

Does it make sense to leave the windows tilted all day in summer?

keyboard_arrow_down
It does not make sense to leave the windows tilted all day in summer. Tilted windows offer only minimal air exchange and at the same time allow warm air and heat to flow unhindered into the home. This can cause the home to heat up more. Instead, you should ventilate completely in the morning and evening and keep the windows closed during the day to keep the heat outside.

Why is cross ventilation so effective in summer?

With cross ventilation, you open opposite windows, creating a draught. This ensures a quick and efficient exchange of air throughout the home.

What can I do to keep my home cool during the day in summer?

Keep the windows closed during the day and draw curtains or shutters. This will prevent the sun from heating up the rooms and maintain a pleasant indoor climate. An air purifier can also filter stale indoor air and refresh the room.
